Petunia the Turtle

Petunia Turtle

     

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn - small amounts of CA (variegated) and CB (solid color)- for turtle
small amount of yellow and pink - for flower
US crochet hook size F
Polyfill
Yarn needle


Notes: Do not join rounds unless indicated. Mark the beginning of each round with a stitch marker or scrap of yarn.

Top Shell

Rnd 1 (Right side): With variegated yarn, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around.

Rnd 3: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (18 sc)

Rnd 4: (Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (24 sc)

Rnd 5: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 6: (Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (30 sc)

Rnds 7 - 8: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 9: (Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (36 sc)

Rnd 10: Sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in front loop of next sc, ch 1, turn.

Rnd 11: Work 5 dc in first sc, *sk next sc, sc in next sc, sk next sc**, 5 dc in next sc, repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **. Join with a sl st in turning ch 1. Fasten off.

Bottom Shell

Rnd 1(Right side): With variegated yarn, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around.

Rnd 3: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (18 sc)

Rnd 4: (Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (24 sc)

Rnd 5: (Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (30 sc)

Rnd 6: (Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (36 sc)

Rnd 7: Sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in next sc, fasten off.

With a length of variegated yarn, with wrong sides touching, sew the bottom shell to the free loops of rnd 10 of top shell. Stuff firmly before closing.

Legs (Make 4)

Rnd 1: With CB yarn, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3: Sc in back loop only of each sc around.

Rnds 4 - 6: Sc in each sc around. At the end of rnd 6, join with a sl st in next sc, fasten off.

Stuff legs firmly. Pin legs into position on bottom shell and sew into place.

Head

Rnd 1: Starting at face, with CB yarn, ch 3, work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 4 sc in last ch, working around to opposite side of starting ch work 2 sc in next ch. (8 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in each next 2 sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in last sc. (12 sc)

Rnds 3 - 4: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 5: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (18 sc)

Rnds 6 - 7: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 8: (Sc in next 4 sc, decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) repeat around. (15 sc)

Rnd 9: (Sc in next 3 sc, decrease 1 sc over next 2 sc) repeat around. (12 sc)

Rnd 10: Sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in next sc, fasten off.

Stuff head firmly and flatten slightly. To sew head onto body correctly, the starting ch of head should lay horizontally. Sew head to top shell over rnds 7 - 9 centered between front legs.

Tail

Rnd 1: With CB yarn, ch 2. 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 3: (Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat around. (8 sc)

Rnds 4 - 5: Sc in each sc around. At the end of rnd 5, join with a sl st in next sc. Leaving a length of yarn for sewing, fasten off.

Stuff tail and sew opening closed, sew tail to back of top shell over rnd 7, centered between the back legs.

Flower

Rnd 1: With yellow yarn and starting at center, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, leaving a sewing length, fasten off.

Rnd 2: (This rnds makes the petals) Join pink yarn in any sc of center. Ch 1, work sc, 2 dc, and sc all in same sc as joining and in each sc around. Join with a sl st in first sc, fasten off.

Finishing:

Weave in the loose end of the pink yarn of flower. With the remaining length of yellow yarn, sew flower to side of turtle shell.

With a length of black yarn, embroider eyes onto face.

Weave in any remaining loose ends.
